“So do you like her?” My dad says in car driving to his house. Oh how I have been dreading this moment that I would hear those words.
“Um yea she’s ok,” my big sister said.
“Yea what she said,” my big brother said nodding his head as if he was having a spaz attack.
“What about you?” My dad now puts the spotlight on me. He was trying to look at me, but couldn’t because he was driving. Oh no, I wasn’t ready , I was anticipating this conversation to be in like two maybe three years from now. Now, I just didn’t know what to say, I hadn’t worked out the details.
Once I herd those words I knew I was doomed. How could he want to purpose to this woman that is just so ughhh?! Her name is Cathy, (Catherine.) All I want to do at this point is go into my grave. My dad has no idea, but I hate her. They say hate is a really strong word, but in this case it’s not strong enough. She is all of the things I hate; mean, loud, annoying, and two faced. She will act like a sweet housewife with my father around, and then when my father is gone, she is wicked and her voice turns evil and nasty. Every time I see her I want to tell her to get some clothes age appropriate. There aren’t enough words to describe how I feel about her. I don’t think I can ever love her.
This has been the longest car ride ever. The tension between my father and I is heated. It’s taken me a while to give him my answer, and that’s making him get uncomfortable. Now, all eyes are on me.
“Um you know she’s, um Cathy,” I said.
“What do you mean she’s Cathy?”
“Well you should know you’re the one that wants to marry her!” I said in an angry, and upset tone.
“You never answered my question, weather you liked her or not.” Why does my dad have to question me. I try to act like I didn’t hear him, but it didn’t really work. All I can think about is Cathy’s dirty looks, her hair flips, and the annoying tone in her voice. I mean I should just tell him that I’ll never like or even love her. I know she will never like or even love me either.
I still couldn’t process the thought of my dad getting married to this horrible nightmare. I still wasn’t ready for this, even after all this time to think. I wasn’t about to tell my dad this, I couldn’t, I wouldn’t. This would break him, this would break me. Even worse he would be dating again. I hate when he dates, he will date a girl who probably doesn’t even know who the president is. I’ll wait, I’ll tell him when it’s official. Yea that works right. Tell him she’s great, that she would be a great step mom. Make him feel great.
I’m about to cry knowing that I am about to ruin my life, or “the devil” is. Why did this feel like a million hours, in such a short car ride. How could I deal with this for the rest of my life. Ok maybe I should tell him I hate her. No, I can’t. Then the fatal words came out.
“I love her. She is the best, I won’t be able to wait until she is my step mom!” I said it with no hesitation. A tear drop fell followed by a lot more. When we got to his house I went to my room, and cried myself to sleep. This might have been the worst day of my life. My dad never noticed how quiet I was when I came downstairs. He winked at me. Then he said the next time I see them, there will be a ring on someone’s finger. I couldn’t even stand. I sobbed for three hours until I ran out of tears. I ruined my life forever. Later I found out they were engaged on my birthday. The best gift I could’ve ever gotten!
